Old Plastic Garbage Cans Find New Life @cityofvictoria #recycle

Old Plastic Garbage Cans Find New Life as Locally Produced Synthetic Lumber Products

VICTORIA, BC – On Saturdays during February, City of Victoria residents can drop off clean, unwanted plastic garbage cans at the Public Works Yard, free of charge.  The plastic cans will be recycled by Syntal Products who will make them into synthetic lumber for use in such outdoor projects as decks, retaining walls, raised gardens and fence posts.

With the introduction of new standard Green and Grey Bins for Kitchen Scraps and Garbage collection, the City of Victoria saw a need to find a sustainable recycling option for the old plastic cans and this local processor was a great fit. The Kitchen Scraps and Garbage collection program begins on February 4. The City of Victoria will continue to deliver the 14,000 sets of Green and Grey Bins to Victoria households.  Residents are reminded to look inside their Green Bins where they will find a kitchen catcher, their collection schedule and a ‘how to’ guide.

When thinking about what to do with the old garbage cans, the City of Victoria encourages residents to first consider the idea of cleaning and reusing them to store emergency household kits, outdoor toys, pet food or garden supplies, for example.  If residents prefer to recycle their cans there are a few options.
