Victoria BC – A prolific property offender was
arrested on a stolen bike by a quick thinking cop and her K9 partner early this
morning.
A VicPD K9 officer and dog were in the 1200-block of
Carlisle Avenue in Esquimalt at approximately 3:30 am this morning when a dark
clad cyclist caught the officer’s attention. The cyclist was riding the
wrong way up the street and had no helmet or lights on the bike. The
officer identified herself and shone her flashlight at the suspect who was
revealed to be a property criminal with whom she recognized to be a property
thief.
The officer noted that there was a severed cable bike lock
hanging on the handlebars, leading her to surmise that the bike was recently
stolen. Her calls to stop were ignored and the suspect pedaled faster in
an attempt to flee. It was at that time that Police Service Dog Uno took
up pursuit. PSD Uno chased for approximately 30 feet, when the suspect looked
behind him and saw that the dog was closing the distance.
The suspect threw down the bike and yelled “OK, I give
up”. The officer called the dog off and arrested the suspect without
incident. A large pair of bolt cutters was found slung around his
shoulder.
The 28-year-old man of no fixed address was held for court
this morning. Officers are recommending charges of possession of stolen
property under $5000 and possession of break in instruments.
Officers are also hoping the public can help in identifying
the bike in order to get it back to its rightful owner. It is a black and
silver Rocky Mountain bike with rear rack and kickstand. If you may believe
this bike may have been stolen from you, please attend VicPD’s West division at
500 Park Place in Esquimalt.
