VICTORIA, BC – Today is the first day of both kitchen
scraps and garbage collection in the City of Victoria. This new program
aims to keep up to 30% of Victoria’s current waste stream out of the landfill,
while treating organic waste as the resource that it is. The ‘Victoria
Waste’ collection day app is also live today, providing residents with iPhones
and smartphones one more way to receive reminders about their collection days.
The City of
Victoria’s Kitchen Scraps and Garbage program serves 14,000 residences.
With the old garbage-only program, 4,800 tonnes of garbage were sent to
Hartland landfill each year. The new program will divert up to 1,500
tonnes of organics from the landfill each year. The separated kitchen
scraps will be transferred to Central Saanich where they will be processed and
used as fertilizer on local farms.
Kitchen
scraps, which include all food leftovers and food-soiled paper products, are to
be collected daily using the small kitchen catcher and then transferred into
the larger Green Bin for collection. Garbage items are collected in the
same way as residents did in the old garbage-only program and then placed in
the Grey Bin. Both bins will be picked up together from backyards every
two weeks and the empty bins will be left at the front of each property.
Collection
days are now broken into 10 zones to cover the two-week pick up cycle.
Depending on what zone a residence is in, the first collection day could be
between February 4 and February 19. Residents can visit www.victoria.ca/schedule to view and
download their personal collection day calendar and can also sign up for email,
voice mail, twitter or text reminders. Over 1,400 residents have already
signed up for these reminders.
Starting
today, the ‘Victoria Waste’ app is available and offers residents one more way
to be reminded. iPhone and smartphone users can visit www.victoria.ca/schedule to download
the app. The apps can also be downloaded by searching for “Victoria
Waste” in the app stores.
