VICTORIA, B.C. – Following back-to-back wins at
home, the University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team have found
themselves on a six-game win streak. Hoping to extend their run to eight, the
Vikes travel to Calgary, Feb. 8-9, to take on the Mount Royal Cougars in an
important series that will help depict the playoff picture.

Last weekend, Feb. 1-2, the Vikes toppled the UNBC Timberwolves with respective scores of 89-80 and 72-61. The gutsy Timberwolves challenged the Vikes in the two-game series with both nights yielding early leads for the visitors. Eventually, the home side came through with some gritty hoops to close the gap and push their Canada West record to 13-5.
The MRU Cougars are 3-15 and were dealt two losses last weekend, Feb. 1-2, in a double-header against No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds.
Currently leading the team in scoring is Las Vegas-native Terrell Evans. The fourth-year Vike has a points per game average of 17.6 and leads the conference in steals with 3.4 per game. This past Saturday his electric style of play sparked a third quarter 10-0 run for the Vikes and tag-teamed with fifth-year starter Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.) the veteran duo are unstoppable. Acheampong boasts a 13.3 points-per-game average and shooting from the arc has a .365 accuracy.
Recently, the Vikes’ unsung hero has been sophomore Reiner Theil (West Vancouver, B.C.). The Vancouver College-transfer leads the Vikes in minutes played with 30.3 per game his defensive determination has played a key role in the Vikes’ success. At present, the Vikes are the top defensive team in the conference, only allowing their opposition an average of 67.7 points per game.
“He’s our team leader in that department,” said Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp. “He’s not always a guy that gets a lot of notoriety being a defensive stopper but most people that are familiar with sports at every level know that it’s key to being successful and each night he guards the best offensive player on the other team.”
Leading MRU is third-year Awet Abraha with a .382 accuracy from the field and an average of 14.9 points per game. Veteran Nick Loewen is not far behind with a 12.8 points-per-game average and an impressive 7.2 rebounds per game.
The Vikes play the Mount Royal Cougars this weekend in Calgary, Feb. 8-9, at 7 p.m. and 6 p.m. PST. The game will be broadcast live at http://uvic.canadawest.tv.
