For the second year
in a row, the University of Victoria has been named one of Canada’s Best
Diversity Employers. The winners of the 2013 competition were announced Feb.
19, recognizing 55 organizations that lead the nation in creating inclusive
workplace cultures.
UVic was one
of only two Victoria organizations included on the list, and one of five in BC.
The university was recognized for a variety of initiatives, including managing
a mental health task force that organizes awareness events throughout the year,
maintaining a diversity and equity steering committee, and hosting an annual
diversity research forum.
“We are
delighted that the university’s strong commitment to diversity has been
recognized again this year,” says Kane Kilbey, Associate Vice-President Human
Resources. “It is one of our top priorities to recruit and retain a group of
diverse and exceptionally talented people, and to support them in creating a
welcoming and inclusive atmosphere on our campus.”
Grace Wong
Sneddon, Director of Academic Leadership Initiatives and Adviser to the Provost
on Diversity and Equity, attended the reception in Toronto to accept the award.
The Canada’s
Best Diversity Employers competition looks for organizations with clearly
defined strategies to reach their diversity goals, along with a variety of
programs to promote cultural diversity, review and tracking measures.
