VICTORIA,
BC — The City of Victoria will be conducting preliminary site investigation
work, including geotechnical and environmental analysis, of City owned land
known as Ship Point. The City issued a request for proposal for the work this
week.
“Recognizing
the importance of the harbour in the City’s economic landscape, it is prudent
of us as a landowner to understand the environmental and geotechnical sites
specifics of this land,” said Mayor Dean Fortin. “There has long been
discussion about the potential use of these lands; however, we’re not in a
position to advance any future planning for these sites until we have a better
understanding of the site conditions.”
Site
investigation work is expected to start in June. Work will include drilling
boreholes to collect soil samples. Geotechnical analysis is used to identify
the composition of subsurface material including rock and soil. It examines
potential risks to conditions from seismic activity and the water table.
Environmental analysis includes testing and identification of contamination
that may exists in the area.
Ship
Point is currently used as public parking and for temporary special events and
festivals. The area of the study includes 940, 946, and 1000 Wharf Street. 1000
Wharf Street is currently leased to West Coast Air for a float plane terminal.
The
City expects to receive reports on findings by the end of this year. Staff will
then bring results of the study forward to Council for information. Work
undertaken at the site will be funded through the Tax Sale Lands Reserve and
has been approved as part of the 2013 budget.
This
work is not expected to impact special events planned at Ship Point.
