Victoria BC – VicPD arrested a 29-year-old Victoria
man for breaching his Conditional Sentence Order (C.S.O.) after flaunting a gun
as he walked downtown.
The 911 Communications Centre received a call at 1 p.m. on
Sunday reporting a man walking down the 900-block of Fort Street with a handgun
in his hand. Multiple police units responded to the area and located the
suspect on Broughton Street.
He was quickly and carefully taken into custody and admitted
to having a replica handgun that he had placed in a dumpster nearby. The
replica gun was located and identified as the one he had been carrying.
It was learned that the suspect was breaching his CSO as he
was not to have any weapons, replica or not. He was brought back to VicPD
headquarters.
“Replica guns can cause a real emergency,” said Sgt. Colin
Brown of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team. “Each time we get a
report of a weapon we must take that call seriously and act accordingly. Under
ever-changing circumstances it’s often impossible for police to distinguish
between real and replica firearms. Many of these replica firearms are
increasingly made to appear indistinguishable from the real thing. We cannot
take chances with public safety so leave these replicas at home.”
The suspect was tele-bailed and will be held in custody
until his next court appearance on April 15th.
