Red Cross responding to residential fires across B.C. #redcross @redcrosscanada

(Burnaby, April 8, 2013): The Canadian Red Cross is actively responding to meet the needs of people affected by devastating residential fires throughout the province. Four apartment fires and one house fire have disrupted the lives of families in communities across B.C.

In five communities around the province, Red Cross Disaster Management volunteers are meeting with residents to assess their situations, provide them with goods and/or services to meet their immediate and ongoing needs, link them to appropriate agencies, and provide a listening ear. In Nanaimo, Langley, Saanich and Vernon, Red Cross volunteers are working with local Emergency Social Services and agencies to help residents impacted by apartment fires. In Langley, 100 suites were damaged in the fire and more than 60 people evacuated; there has been one death. In Terrace, Red Cross is working with Muskamo Housing to help a family of eight impacted by a house fire.

“Our thoughts are with the communities and our condolences go out to those families who have experienced great personal loss,” says Kimberley Nemrava, Red Cross Director, B.C. and Yukon. “We are working hard all across B.C. to make sure people affected by the fires have the support they need. We’re also grateful to the dedicated volunteers who are on-the-ground in the communities providing that assistance.”

Red Cross aid does not duplicate assistance provided through insurance, government or other agencies. Our services also rely on the generous financial support of individual and corporate donors. For more information or to donate, please visit www.redcross.ca or contact any Red Cross office.
